Very nice, Pittster! If you want any help with details, I'm a Gundam fan and would be happy to help. Or I'll just sit back and see what you do with this.
Nice prelim work there. Is that a scan of a hand sketch? If so do you ink on the computer or do that by hand? If on the computer then what program do you use?

would you believe this is a scan of a hand drawn sketch in "biro".
i'm not currently kitted out for inking on the computer, I've tried using the mouse but I don't have the fine control I need. I've got an older graphics tablet, but i haven't used it in a year.
for computer colouring I use Arcsoft's Photoimpressions, it's a bit basic but does what I need it to. The only downside is it eats up a lot of processing power sometimes, so i have to remember NOT to surf and scan at the same time.
it came free with my first digicam, Arcsoft do do a version which is closer to photoshop, which I've had recommended before.
So it is a hand sketch then? I don't know what is biro I am assuming that it is a scanning program that you have.
If you are going to ink on the computer then use a tablet to do that, using your mouse to do that doesn't seem natural to your hand. Now I haven't done inking on the computer with any of my work since I don't have a tablet yet and don't know how to use the programs I have that I could do that in. (why I will be taking a photoshop classes at the end of April)
If your computer is slow on processing power, processors prices have gone down with the quad-cores out now. If you can you might just want to upgrade.

biro? It's a ball point pen. the reason I expected someone to find it suprising is that in the UK a ball point pen is better associated with writting than drawing as the results aren't clean enough. but for concept sketching I can get a pretty good result quickly.
